Day Hikes

Vembadi Peak

Vembadi, at 2466 m, is the second highest point in the palni Hills. Start off on the Pillar Rocks Road and keep going towards Berijam until you come to the correct milestone (guide essential here!) and then take the log road to the right and keep walking for about an hour. The landmark from where to start climbing is the woodcutter’s settlement. A small path to the right leads you up to the top. Sometimes it is overgrown, and you have to go through the wattle forest, Once out in the open again, you can see the stone summit. Just aim for that, and get up to the top.

From there you have a magnificent view over Berijam Lake, Vandaravu range, Mannavanur sheep farm, Pumbari valley and over to Kerala. The Kodaikanal TV towe stands out as a landmark of where you began the hike. Take the same route back.

Gundar Valley

A beautiful walk through wattle forest and some shoals down towards the Gundar River and the Gundar Falls. It’s not easy to find the right path, so the best thing to do is to take a guide. The walk starts on the Observatory road. Walk past the Observatory to the “Toll Gate”, which is now only a dilapidated small house. There, turn right and after a short distance take the left log road. From there, walk on and look for a path leading downwards to the right. Follow the path down the valley. After a while you’ll be crossing a small stream. Follow the path parallel to the stream along the side of the hill down to where the stream joins the Gundar River. This is a beautiful place for resting and picnicking, even swimming. If you want to continue walking down to the Falls, follow the river, at first to the side, later hopping on the boulders all the way to the edge. Be careful. Same route back.
