Where to stay in kodaikanal?

Kodaikanal town has mushroomed in the last ten years and I will not attempt a comprehensive list of accommodation. If you are planning a long stay, try and make a brief trip there beforehand, preferably between July and January, to rent a cheaper lodge or bungalow. Until a few years ago one could rent beautiful bungalows from various missions or private individuals but these compounds are now being fragmented and sold. Kodaikanal Club has reciprocal arrangements with other clubs in the country. Below is a list of some upper, middle and lower range hotels; remember that rates do go up during the season.

Generally even the lower budget rooms are clean and well-maintained, though you may have to put up with a musty carpet or rug. If you are lucky enough to be and Indian Government Officer, the Public Works, Forest and other departments have guest houses and bungalows for the use of officials and their families.

Sadly, the days of rustic (but clean) rooms and bath water heated on a wood stove are gone. Kodai has hit the 20th century with a bang, and hotels offer STAR TV, STD phones in all rooms, tow-channel music, shopping arcades, doctors on call and all the other things you may have wanted to forget about! In the following list, High Budget includes hotels charging over Rs. 600 per double room, Middle, those for Rs.400-600 per double room, and Lower, those for Rs. 100-400 per double room.
